A revival of Brazilian metal type for contemporary reading
This typeface is part of a revival project developed at Type West, rooted in my interest in Brazilian graphic history and cultural identity. It is based on metal type from Tipografia Irmãos Gapski, a traditional print shop in Curitiba founded in 1957, where a large collection of type has been preserved over decades.
The original forms were produced by Funtimod, one of Brazil’s main type foundries in the early 20th century, drawing from European influences adapted to the local market. Starting from 10 pt metal type, this revival translates those forms into a contemporary text typeface, designed for clarity, rhythm, and long-form reading.
The weight currently shown is the Book weight, developed for text use. The typeface is being expanded into a full family, which will be released soon.
